We will increase the biodiversity, landscape and amenity value of the South Inverness area by providing protected habitat areas, promoting carbon literacy and creating a protected green space on the city’s edge.

1
We are about to start work on the Smiddy Field, a 8.28Ha green hub in an urban area of high housing density on the outskirts of Inverness City. We intend to plant hedgerows around the Field and will be converting the field into a green community hub with 145 allotments and public green spaces. We will be planting native species such as hazel (grown from seed of local provenance), holly, crab apple and dogwood. We will also be panting a wild flower meadow.
2
We are converting a field that has for years been used for mono culture of barley/oat growing into an area of high plant and hedgerow biodiversity with a focus on native plants for pollinators.
3
We will encourage volunteers to contribute to every aspect of the development of the Field to encourage people to get out into their environment, to improve biodiversity and to enjoy it.
4
We will help tackle the climate emergency by increasing local food growing, reducing food miles, educating and promoting active travel. It will also contribute to deliver Highland Council’s Food Growing Strategy by expanding available growing space, and contribute to ‘Highland’s Good Food Plan’.
